\n
\nThe treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning is high-dose oxygen, usually using a facemask attached to an oxygen reserve bag.
\nCarbon monoxide levels in the blood may be periodically checked until they are low enough to safely send you home.
\nIn severe poisoning, if available, a hyperbaric pressure chamber may be used to give even higher doses of oxygen.
\nIt is important to find the source of the carbon monoxide. Your local fire department or public service company will help find the source of carbon monoxide and make sure the building is safe.","dateCreated":"1316698093","smartDate":"Sep 22, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"lewisj4","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lewisj4","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"42956194","body":"Jonah, keep researching if that is what you mean by tell you what to do.","dateCreated":"1316698154","smartDate":"Sep 22, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"charlieR4","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/charlieR4","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"42956300","body":"Ayana, can you help Jonah with the research? \nYour best protection is to install a carbon monoxide alarm on each level of your home or boat as your first line of defense. According to the National Fire Protection Association some 93% of homes have smoke alarms, yet the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that only 15% have carbon monoxide alarms. A carbon monoxide monitor with an audible alarm works much like a home smoke alarm and beeps loudly when the sensors detect carbon monoxide.
\n
\n
\nIf the alarm sounds, evacuate the building. People who have symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning should seek emergency medical care. Call the fire department or public service company to investigate.
\n
\n
\nInspect your home for hazards.
\n
\n
\nYour home heating system, chimney, and flue must be inspected and cleaned by a qualified technician every year. Keep chimneys clear of bird and squirrel nests, leaves, and residue to ensure proper ventilation.
\n
\n
\nBe sure your furnace and other appliances, such as gas ovens, ranges, and cook tops, are inspected for adequate ventilation.
\n
\n
\nDo not burn charcoal inside your house (even in the fireplace). Have gas fireplaces inspected each fall to ensure the pilot light burns safely.
\n
\n
\nDo not operate gasoline-powered engines in confined areas such as garages or basements. Do not leave your car, mower, or other vehicle running in an attached garage, even with the door open.
\n
\n
\nDo not block or seal shut exhaust flues or ducts for appliances such as water heaters, ranges, and clothes dryers.
\n

\n
\nThe most common source of carbon monoxide exposure is motor vehicle exhaust. You can be exposed to carbon monoxide at home if your appliances that burn fuel are not operating correctly, if your appliances are not vented, or if your chimneys, vents, and flues are blocked or damaged.
\n
\nYou can be exposed if you leave your car running in a garage, use stoves or clothes dryers for heating your home, or breathe tobacco smoke. Exposure to carbon monoxide can come from burning charcoal or using portable fuel-burning camping equipment inside your home, garage, vehicle, or tent. Exposure can also come from using gasoline-powered tools and engines indoors.
\n
\nYou can be exposed to carbon monoxide at work if you operate gasoline-powered machinery or vehicles in an enclosed space. You can also be exposed if you are a firefighter, traffic police officer, coal miner, toll booth operator, or transportation mechanic, and if you work with blast furnaces, smelters, coke ovens, or processes that use carbon monoxide.
\n
\n
\nHow can carbon monoxide affect my health?
\n
\nExposure to very high concentrations of carbon monoxide can cause convulsions, coma, and death through carbon monoxide poisoning. Exposure to high levels can cause impaired vision and coordination, unconsciousness, headaches, dizziness, confusion, vomiting, muscle weakness, and nausea.
\n
\nIf you are pregnant, exposure to carbon monoxide may cause miscarriage or increase the risk of damage to a developing fetus; it may also result in babies with low birth weights and nervous system damage. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur sooner in young children; pregnant women; elderly people; people with anemia, lung disease, or heart disease; people at high altitudes; or people who smoke cigarettes.
